Mickey Arthur will be successful, says PCB chairman

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan on Sunday assured the appointment of South African Mickey Arthur as head coach is not a mistake.

Mickey was named as Waqar Younis’s successor on Friday, a move criticised by some claiming he had earlier levelled match-fixing allegations against Pakistani players.

“Look Mickey Arthur has already clarified to us about the statement he made some years ago. So it is a dead issue now,” Shaharyar was quoted as saying by Express.

Shaharyar further said that Mickey was associated with Karachi Kings in the inaugural Pakistan Super League (PSL) which will help him in his new assignment.

“He coached Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League, so he knows the players well. He should be successful in his assignment,” said the PCB chairman.

Mickey successfully coached his native South Africa from 2005-2010 before migrating to Australia, where he remained coach of the national team for 19 months.

However, he found his job in danger after Australia lost a Test series in India 4-0 and followed it up with a poor showing at the Champions Trophy in England.

He was unceremoniously sacked two weeks before the Ashes series started in England in June 2013, with two years to run on his contract, and replaced by Darren Lehmann.

Mickey later sued Cricket Australia for up to Aus$4 million, claiming there had been a deliberate campaign against him, before reaching a confidential agreement with the governing body.
